German breeders were seeking to develop not only a herding dog, but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism and intelligence.
Their success was evidenced by the fact that the Alsatian had proven itself a more than capable police dog, and subsequent careful breeding perfected its abilities as an intelligent and fearless companion and guardian dog.
