Traditionally used for hunting, hounds have a natural instinct to chase using site, sound or smell.

Hound Dogs Love To Chase

Hound dogs have traditionally been bred specifically for hunting. The history of hound dogs working with man as a hunting animal can be traced back to Egyption times and beyond.

Hound dogs are a very diverse group, ranging from the fleet of foot Greyhound, to the lumbering Bloodhound and from the tallest of all dogs, the Irish Wolfhound, to the short legged Dachshund.

Just as diverse are the sences that the hound dogs use to chase with. The Saluki, Greyhound and Wolfhound breeds use their eyesight to chase. The Bloodhound, Beagle and Basset Hound breeds are known as scent hounds, due to their highly developed nose.

Other hound dogs rely on a combination of their senses, and of course, their physiology.

Without doubt the strangest physical development I've seen bred into any dog, is the webbed feet of the Otter Hound. These hound dogs have been bred to chase and catch Otters by swimming after them. Spread his toes apart, and you'll see that the Otter Hound has webbing between his toes!
